Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler is recruiting for a Materials Science Managing Consultant who will undertake steering of significant parts of materials and structural integrity research and technology projects.



  • Agreeing the strategy with the customer
  • Coordinating bidding activities
  • Liaising with business managers and team members to agree an implementation plan
  • Taking responsibility for delivery of leading edge technical work to time and cost

The post-holder will be responsible for overseeing the quality of the work undertaken by the team and by suppliers and peer reviewing or approving of technical reports prepared by the team. In addition to the main role managing research areas, the post-holder may also be required to provide authoritative personal consultancy to assigned projects at Managing Consultant level.




Skills / Qualifications


The successful candidate should have experience of working within a highly qualified technical team, and should have a PhD qualification in an appropriate discipline such as

  • Chemistry
  • Materials science
  • Structural integrity / mechanical engineering

 It would be advantageous to have had experience of some or all of the following technical areas:

  • Core materials
  • Environmentally assisted cracking
  • Graphite structural integrity
  • Non-destructive testing

Awareness of the commercial background to technical work undertaken will be essential and the successful candidate should be able to express the significance of the work undertaken with confidence and authority. Whilst the main work will require a Birchwood base, from time to time work at other locations in the UK may be required.
