Job Purpose

The company is seeking a Value Chain Optimization leader. This position will lead planning, economics, crude product trading, and marketing for a refinery in Hawaii. The Value Chain Optimization leader provides economic guidance for operational and commercial decisions for the Refinery and distribution area that will help determine what crude is acquired and what products from that crude will ultimately be sold to the consumer market. This position is highly influential and critical to the success of the new company and is a senior role on the refinery leadership team, and the new Value Chain Optimization leader will participate in the management equity program.

The ideal candidate will have spent the majority of his/her career in crude supply and marketing roles and will also bring a solid grounding and understanding of refining operations. It is imperative that this leader bring a deep commercial understanding of the entire value chain backed by significant and relevant exposure to commercial and marketing roles of increasing importance throughout his/her career.

Key Accountabilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and energizing efforts to safely maximize gross margin delivered at the refinery. Specific priorities and responsibilities of the position are:

  • Work with operations and company leadership to develop a 1-3 month Operating Plan designed to extract maximum value from the Crude-to-Customer supply chain. This includes a sophisticated plan for understanding stock balances, commercial opportunities, under-utilized capacity, constraint analysis, and new opportunities within the Refinery distribution network.
  • Oversight of all product movements in and out of the refinery including direct exchanges and strategic partnership opportunities.
  • Financial risk management of all fuel related exposures including crude oil, refining margins and crack spread exposure.
  • Investigates and identifies major economic drivers in the Hawaiian market that impact crude buying and selling decisions.
  • Ensure adequate processes are in place to maintain an accurate linear program representation of the refinery used for short, medium, and long term planning and optimization. Ensure work processes for continuous improvement of the linear program representation are also in place.
  • Minimize the losses due to unavailability through robust preparation for planned maintenance and through re-optimization of the strategy for unplanned events.
  • Act as the refinery's Single Point of Accountability for Product Quality.


The Value Chain Optimization leader will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree



10+ years of experience in refinery Value Chain Optimization



Ability to read and understand refining value chain



Successfully translated knowledge of value chain into action supporting corporate objectives




Marketing and supply post refinery experience



Experience working in operational roles such as refining, distribution, or transportation




Understanding of local culture and sensitivity to how business operates in Hawaii




Experience with linear programming



Track record of partnering with 3rd party trading/supply organizations (e.g. Mitsubishi)




Willingness to permanently relocate to Hawaii
