Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler Environment & Infrastructure’s Chelmsford office is seeking an Environmental Engineer for work with remediation planning documents, engineering design, and construction to support our growing sediments practice area.


The Chelmsford office includes a multi-disciplinary environmental consulting team with approximately 75 professionals including engineers, scientists, risk assessors, environmental permitting, designers, and support staff. Amec Foster Wheeler offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging, fast-paced and innovative projects for a wide range of clients throughout the US.


Key Responsibilities


The position will involve all facets of environmental remediation including, but not limited to, remediation feasibility studies (including for contaminated sediments sites), remedial investigations, remedial design of treatment facilities, and operation and maintenance support. This position offers the opportunity to work with a large and diverse team of design engineers to address complex environmental challenges executing the following roles/responsibilities:


  • Oversee operation and maintenance of remediation systems and document site operations in routine monitoring reports
  • Analyze and interpret environmental data and prepare related reports
  • Prepare engineering evaluations and feasibility studies, design treatment systems, and develop conceptual cost estimates
  • Prepare Work Plans, Operation and Maintenance Plans, Sampling and Analysis Plans, Feasibility Studies, and Remedial Action Plans
  • Prepare environmental permit applications and compliance reports supporting remediation system operations (e.g., air permitting, sewer discharge permitting, etc.)
  • Review plans, specifications and special provisions for remediation projects
  • Prepare requests for proposals and assist in subcontractor procurement
  • Oversee remedial action implementation
  • Review and comment on contractor submittals
  • Track payment applications, requests for information, change order requests and general construction phase submittals
  • Conduct construction closeout activities including final inspections, completion of punch lists, record drawings, and contract closeout

Skills / Qualifications



  • BS in Civil/Environmental/Chemical Engineering
  • 4 to 10 years of design or construction experience with a focus on environmental applications in site remediation, wastewater treatment, or similar
  • Understanding of means and methods associated with environmental remediation technologies and treatment systems, mostly notably those associated with the remediation of contaminated sediment sites, including various types of excavation or dredging, dewatering and dredge water treatment processes, disposal and reuse options for dredged materials, capping, and in-situ sediment treatment
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. Strong organizational abilities
  • Demonstrated professional judgment, consistency and attention to detail
  • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites - Anticipated travel expected to be less than 10% overnight travel; however, extended travel up to two weeks is possible at times
  • Adaptability and willingness to adjust to client needs
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours if required
  • Must pass drug test, physical, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy




  • MS in Civil/Environmental/Coastal Engineering
  • Professional Engineer registration or ability to obtain within 1 year
  • Construction inspection/oversight experience, knowledge of construction means and methods especially related to soil and sediment remediation
  • Experience studying and implementing remedial solutions for in-water contamination, i.e., remediation/dredging of contaminated sediments in a variety of environments
  • Sediment sampling in various environments
  • Experience preparing engineering cost estimates, client presentations, and various environmental permit applications, with emphasis in New England states
  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER Training
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail
  • Self-starter and lifelong learner


Physical Demands


  • Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions
  • May lift equipment and carry laboratory samples which require the ability to lift up to 40 pounds
