Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler Environment & Infrastructure is recruiting for a Principal / Senior Geotechnical Engineer, with a specialization in mining projects (tailings dams, water management systems, waste rock, open pit, etc.), to join our team in Mississauga, Ontario. This role will involve technical leadership on projects and supervision of other engineers and consultants on the team.   You will be responsible for the mentoring of staff, management of clients and related business development, oversight on technical quality, and delivery on projects including design, review and project management.   These responsibilities will be delivered within a framework that manages risks and prioritizes safety.


Key Responsibilities 

  • Consult on tailings and mine waste management projects for North American and International clients
  • Lead and manage project teams, working with other professionals, to deliver high quality projects on time and within budget
  • Establish and maintain client relationships
  • Undertake business development with new and existing clients
  • Coordinate delivery of engineering services and project management according to client-approved scopes of work
  • Prepare technical proposals and reports which may include; design, analyses, geotechnical; subsurface explorations, tailings deposition planning, earthworks design, slope stability analysis, construction documents and management of construction monitoring services
  • Perform technical review on projects within your areas of expertise
  • Manage clients, contractors and sub-consultants on your projects
  • Provide leadership, management and mentoring of technical staff
  • Work as an integrated team member in a multi-discipline environment including hydrogeologists, hydrologists, geochemists, rock mechanics, environmental, and other disciplines
  • Participate as a member of Amec Foster Wheeler’s Global Mining Sector Team to coordinate business activities between offices, divisions and across borders

Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in geotechnical, mining or civil engineering or equivalent; Masters degree is highly desired
  • 15-20 + years of mining sector experience (civil, geotechnical or related experience)
  • Experience with design and construction of tailings pond/dams and related mine-site earthworks infrastructure
  • Project management experience in a mining or construction related environment
  • Proven experience with project budgeting and cost forecasting; good business acumen, capabilities in business development
  • Proven leadership skills of technical teams; ability to multi-task, various strategic and technical interrelated issues
  • Demonstrated successful client management experience
  • Skilled in interpersonal dynamics
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally
  • Eligible for professional registration
