Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler Environment & Infrastructure is currently seeking a Field Environmental Technician with at least 5-8 years experience in operating, maintaining, and optimizing soil and / or groundwater remediation systems; conducting soil, groundwater, and surface water sampling; and providing oversight and documentation of subcontractors performing soil borings, well installations and remediation system installations.


Works independently to provide field and office support to environmental, engineering, and / or design projects. Performs standardized assignments under supervision including tabulating data, drafting simple standard reports, operating testing equipment or software of moderate complexity. Performs routine environmental sampling, field screening and analyses.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct tests and investigations in the field to obtain data for use by environmental, engineering, and scientific personnel in determining engineering, environmental, or physical properties of soil, bedrock, construction materials, air, and aquatic ecosystems
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses to determine chemical and physical properties of experimental and developmental materials
  • Perform field tests according to prescribed procedures, processes and standards
  • Collect air, water or soil samples, prepare samples for testing, record data and prepare summary reports
  • Use specialized equipment and apparatus to prepare analyses, reports, and / or technical drawings
  • Operate and Maintain Remediation Systems
  • Trouble shoot remediation systems
  • Maintain complete and accurate field logs
  • Enter data into specified forms and data packages
  • Confers with Engineer and Scientific staff on test and design efforts
  • Set up, maintain and calibrate equipment
  • Observe and document routine construction operations and write routine field reports
  • May assist and observe contractor work on short and long term construction projects and interact with client, contractor or subcontractor representatives accordingly
  • May prepare work orders for repairs and / or requisitions for replacement of equipment
  • May perform a variety of non-technical tasks designed to assist others in preparing for and / or conducting office, laboratory or field activities
  • May assist in other non - technical projects as appropriate

Skills / Qualifications

  • Combination of technical education or certification plus at least 5 years of industry experience
  • Current OSHA Hazwoper training (29 CFR Part 1910.120)
  • Understanding of applicable scientific methods and technical methodologies
  • Ability to use test equipment in an effective and safe manner
  • Ability to understand procedural manuals and execute work orders
  • Ability to prepare reports and documentation
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to follow instruction
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
  • Must pass Health and Safety Training and Defensive Driving Courses upon hire

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stoop, kneel, climb and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to drive large pick-up truck; ability to drive a trailer would be helpful
  • Ability to use hands to operate field equipment
  • Close, distance and peripheral vision; normal auditory function
  • Must complete employment physical demonstrating ability to meet job requirements including the ability to wear a respirator as required
  • Completion of annual or bi-annual employment physical as required
  • Work will be performed in the field at jobsite away from the office, under a variety of environmental and climatic conditions and on occasion for extended periods of time
