Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler is recruiting for a HR Consultant to join us in our Reading office on a 12 month fixed term contract. As a HR Consultant for Amec Foster Wheeler you will be recognised as an experienced HR professional, influencing and challenging key areas of the business, through the provision of value added HR solutions.



  • Provide an integrated HR service aligned to achieving business objectives while effectively representing the HR function and Amec Foster Wheeler values
  • Develop effective relationships with the Directors, Discipline Managers and Project Managers to gain a commercial understanding of their business strategies and people requirements
  • Proactively contribute to and support the business unit and HR function, as an integral member of each, in the achievement of objectives linked to business strategy, growth and development
  • Support the production of HR elements of departmental Business plan covering areas such as performance management, succession, development, resourcing of talent, retention, employee engagement and organisation design in order to maximise business effectiveness
  • Translate the plans into key deliverables and work closely with the HR functional experts on the design, delivery and measurement of solutions
  • Develop, lead and support good employee relations though active engagement with the elected employee representatives
  • Support functions with effective succession planning through robust regular reviews of personnel in key positions and through effective communication across the HR operations team and across the business in order for Amec Foster Wheeler to retain and develop personnel to meet business requirements
  • Support management to realise the potential in their team or take appropriate steps to address performance issues
  • Drive termination and redundancy situations via effective manpower planning working closely with the functions
  • Consider cost efficiency in your day to day role and in the guidance offered to the functions
  • Assist in skill retention for the business through supporting secondments of key personnel throughout the Organisation
  • Support the implementation of HR processes and interventions, working collaboratively with HR functional experts
  • Provide HR guidance and advice to line managers and Project Managers on HR policy and procedures, balancing commercial needs with best practice. Provide proactive solutions and decision making in conjunction with operational requirements and in line with best practice to support decision making
  • Provide expertise on employment relations and employment law (e.g. disciplinary, grievances, tribunals, capability, redundancy)
  • Ensure risk to the business is minimised to satisfy appropriate legislation and business requirements while recognising best practice and ensuring consistency across the business
  • Coach and educate managers and Project Managers to provide them with the tools to improve their ability to manage people. Challenge activities and behaviours in a constructive manner, while supporting colleagues and managers
  • Initiate and facilitate the correct use of occupational health and absence management ensuring best practice and company policy are adhered to with the intention of minimising absenteeism via effective
  • integrated case management by HR and relevant line management
  • Produce and analyse management information to identify trends, issues and potential solutions
  • Make good use of the information available to advise on appropriate terms and conditions in line with performance and market conditions in order to support business development and individual growth
  • Facilitate positive relationships between the overall HR Department and line management
  • Participate in cross-functional HR project teams, in support of transformation changes, while maintaining effective operational delivery
  • Assist in the development of others in HR through taking opportunities to coach and mentor
  • Utilise internal/external sources to actively pursue CPD and offer new solutions
  • Contribute to the HR sections of bid documents

Learning and Development specific responsibilities

  • To be the focal point for Learning and Development activities within the Reading office.
  • To translate Business unit strategy into the local level activities.
  • To work with the other HR Consultants across the Reading based functions to monitor and coordinator People forums on a regular basis, ensure succession planning is prioritised and Individual Training Needs Analysis are carried out as required
  • Utilise internal/external sources to actively identify learning activities available and share this information with management and the rest of the HR team


Skills / Qualifications

  • CIPD qualified, equivalent formal qualification in HR or qualified by experience to the appropriate level of skill
  • Robust and relevant HR experience, ideally with some time being spent in an engineering or construction environment
  • Experience of managing diverse client relationships
  • Good knowledge of employment law and best practice HR policy and procedure
  • Good knowledge of Learning and Development best practice
