Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler Environment & Infrastructure's Providence, RI office is seeking a motivated Mid-Level Civil Engineer to support projects involving site civil design including land development, drainage, stormwater management, grading, and utility and roadway design. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, and expertise in AutoCAD Civil 3D, utilities design, state and local permitting processes, and stormwater management systems that comply with all Rhode Island environmental rules and regulations. The person in this position will coordinate and oversee projects and project workload with staff engineers. Amec Foster Wheeler offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging and innovative projects for a wide range of clients throughout the US.


The position will involve all facets of site civil engineering including, but not limited to: hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, grading plan development, soil cut / fill volume calculations, due diligence studies and cost estimates and construction oversight. This position offers the opportunity to work with a diverse team of engineers and scientists to address complex environmental challenges executing the following roles / responsibilities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Plans for land development projects
  • Prepare feasibility studies and final designs for stormwater BMPs for new and redevelopment (retrofit) projects
  • Develop existing conditions and proposed design plans for land development projects
  • Prepare technical specifications and design drawings
  • Prepare Due Diligence Studies and accompanying cost estimates for a wide range of land development projects
  • Prepare environmental permit applications and compliance reports supporting land development projects
  • Analyze and interpret environmental data and prepare routine monitoring reports    
  • Prepare requests for proposals and assist in subcontractor procurement
  • Oversee construction of land development projects
  • Review and comment on contractor submittals
  • Track payment applications, requests for information, change order requests and general construction phase submittals
  • Conduct construction closeout activities including final inspections, completion of punch lists, record drawings and contract closeout

Skills / Qualifications


  • BS in Civil Engineering
  • Possess a license to practice Civil Engineering in the State of RI
  • 8 to 10 years of report writing, design and construction experience with a focus on site civil engineering applications
  • Ability to work with and integrate multiple disciplines into civil engineering projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills and strong organizational abilities
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products, AutoCAD Civil 3D, HydroCAD and Hydraflow
  • Demonstrated professional judgment, consistency and attention to detail
  • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites
  • Adaptability and willingness to adjust to client needs
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours if required
  • Must pass drug test, physical, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the company's driving (MVR) policy


  • MS in Civil / Environmental Engineering
  • Construction inspection / oversight experience
  • Experience in stormwater BMP design including low impact development and green infrastructure stormwater management practices

  • Experience in water resource permitting, specifically EPA NPDES permitting (e.g., CGP, MSGP, RGP, MS4)

  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER Training

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team with the ability / desire to lead tasks

  • Attention to detail

  • Self-starter and fast learner

Physical Demands

  • Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions
  • May lift equipment and carry laboratory samples which require the ability to lift up to 40 pounds
