Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler, a recent winner of the Glassdoor Employees' Choice Award for 'Best Place to Work in 2016 - UK Category', is looking for an HSSE Lead to join our Environment & Infrastructure (E&I) operation; a 600-staff team delivering consulting and engineering projects across the UK and Europe. The role would report directly to E&I’s Managing Director and could be based in any of our main office locations: Newcastle upon Tyne, London, Shrewsbury, Leamington Spa, Knutsford, Glasgow, Bristol or Reading.


The role would have responsibility for supporting the E&I Leadership team and management in driving HSSE culture, continuous improvement process across the Operating Unit and ensuring delivery of HSSE objectives. The role would deliver support and advice to staff on implementation and compliance with HSSE law and with internal procedures, and would build relationships with customers to support the safe and successful delivery of work scopes, thus enhancing Amec Foster Wheeler's reputation. There would be active participation in business capture and tender response, promoting HSSE performance and culture as a differentiator for the business. The role would manage the development of direct reports including performance management, objective setting and mentoring.


Key Responsibilities 

  • Support the E&I Leadership Team in providing strong, visible, positive HSSE leadership within E&I and promote the adoption of HSSE best practice, and values associated with the Beyond Zero theme
  • Promote a mature, interdependent HSSE culture that delivers positive commitment to, and engaged all employees in, continuous performance improvement
  • Contribute into monthly E&I Management Team meetings, with accountability for reporting on all HSSE statistics
  • Interface with the wider Amec Foster Wheeler business across the region
  • Take an active role in HSSE leadership of site-based activities across the UK and Europe
  • Lead, provide functional management to, and pro-actively support all staff to achieve project deliverables
  • Play a primary role in providing guidance, support and advice regarding HSSE issues
  • Maintain positive relationships with Client Representatives and Project Management to ensure client and business needs are understood and achieved
  • Be aware of Client HSSE requirements and Amec Foster Wheeler Values and Behaviours and actively promote adherence with Industry Best Practice
  • Prepare, issue and revise contract HSSE Management Plans, inspection / verification and assurance strategies in collaboration with Project Managers
  • Provide input and support HSSE rigor within the supply chain, including evaluation of processes and monitoring performance
  • Monitor current project work scopes and ensure HSSE support is suitably resourced
  • Manage and monitor the performance and development of members
  • Mentor trainee engineers / personnel in order to support Amec Foster Wheeler Personnel Development Plans
  • Liaise with Risk Management to understand risks associated with the project, develop controls to mitigate against risk items
  • Monitor compliance against HSSE improvement plans
  • Lead and coordinate the accident and incident investigation process, and provide support to staff involved as required
  • Manage and coordinate the collation of sustainability and carbon data for the operating unit

Skills / Qualifications

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent or NEBOSH General Certificate and Degree
  • IOSH Managing Environmental Responsibilities (or similar) Management Skills
  • Membership of Recognised Professional Body
  • Experience in a supervisory or management capacity within Environment, Infrastructure or a similar industry
  • In depth knowledge of HSSE Legislation and best practice
  • Commitment to making a positive impact on HSSE performance and achieving a high level of safety leadership
  • Commitment to adherence to HSSE standards
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to establish effective working relationships and communicate at all levels within the organisation
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and leading by personal example
  • Knowledge of Root Cause Analysis and Risk Management techniques
