Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler Power & Process is currently seeking a Protection and Control Engineer with experience in the power delivery industry.


You will be an integral part of Amec Foster Wheeler’s Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Engineering team and will work with our T&D engineering staff.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Researching, developing and reviewing protection coordination studies and protective relay settings for high voltage substation and transmission projects from 15kV through 500 kV
  • Development of protection systems for transmission lines, HV bus, transformers, capacitor banks, reactor banks, feeders and communication assisted protection schemes
  • Perform relay coordination calculations, prepare relay settings and provide field support as necessary
  • Provide engineering / technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems
  • Create control system single line and / or metering and relaying (M&R) drawings outlining the Protection and Control System for electrical facilities
  • Depending upon complexity of the project, may prepare, provide guidance or assist in preparing and developing the engineering deliverables for electric substation projects - including reviewing and the development of one line and three line diagrams; control schematics and wiring diagrams as associated with protection services
  • Understand and work with SCADA systems and communication interfaces including RTUs, HMls and IEDs
  • Write equipment specifications and provide procurement support for control panels and equipment within high voltage electrical facilities
  • Create Bills of Material outlining all necessary parts to construction Protection and Control systems for electrical facilities
  • Carry out studies and calculations related to control system design, including CT saturation, fault current and transient calculations
  • Work as a technical lead and be expected to lead and mentor others as well as to promote the business of system protection engineering
  • Handle multiple projects and provide a detailed design package that complies with applicable engineering design standards and all safety codes
  • Solid understanding of protective relay schemes and concepts, communication schemes and control schemes
  • Familiarity with redundancy concepts and applicable NERC / FERC requirements as they relate to protection of high voltage electrical systems
  • Knowledge of both electromechanical as well as microprocessor based protective relays
  • Engineering / technical expertise in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, schedule and monitor work activities
  • Able to write thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches
  • Engage in continuous improvement of job-related, engineering, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance
  • Work to promote the business of protection and control engineering. Able to meet with clients upon request of Project Manager or Project Engineer
  • Possess effective oral and written communication skills
  • Maintain accurate records and files

Skills / Qualifications


  • Graduate of four year college or university with Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE)
  • 4 to 8 years experience as a practicing engineer in the Electrical Utility industry
  • Registered Professional Engineer or the ability to obtain PE registration within 1 year
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles related to Protection and Control of high voltage electrical facilities
  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations
  • Ability to conduct system modeling, relay coordination studies and development of associated protective relay settings for systems ranging from 15kV to 500kV using Aspen software
  • Ability to program SEL, GE, Basler and other major lines of Micro-processor based relays
  • Ability to set electromechanical and solid state relays
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills


  • Ability to use CAPE software package
  • Proficient in principles of project management
