Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler Power & Process is currently seeking a Transmission Engineer with extensive experience in the power delivery industry.


You will be an integral part of Amec Foster Wheeler’s Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Engineering team and will work with our T&D engineering staff.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform transmission line engineering activities, including detailed design for high voltage transmission lines from 15kV through 500kV
  • Prepare or assist in preparing and developing the engineering deliverables for electric transmission projects - including line routing, structure selection & design, plan & profile drawings, hardware & conductor selection, equipment & construction specifications and all associated calculations
  • Work closely with other engineering and design team members to coordinate overall design package and requirements
  • Develop technical specifications for equipment, structures and construction activities
  • Provide direction and guidance to drafters and designers
  • Monitor and ensure design schedules are met, including regularly providing project status updates to Project Engineer or Project Manager
  • Handle multiple projects and provide detailed design packages that comply with applicable engineering design standards and all safety codes
  • Engineering / technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, estimate, schedule and monitor work activities
  • Able to write thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches
  • Engage in continuous improvement of job-related, engineering, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance
  • Work as a technical lead and be expected to lead and mentor others as well as to promote the business of transmission engineering
  • Possess effective oral and written communication skills
  • Maintain accurate records and files

Skills / Qualifications


  • Graduate of four year college or university with Bachelor of Science in Civil or Electrical Engineering (BSEE)
  • 4 to 8 year experience as a practicing engineer in the Electric Utility industry
  • Registered Professional Engineer or the ability to obtain PE registration within 1 year
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles related to transmission line design
  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Detailed knowledge of NESC code requirements and transmission & structure design is required
  • Design experience specifying and utilizing the following transmission structure types: Tubular Steel Structures and Wood Pole Structures
  • Experience using the following software packages: PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE


  • Experience in the T&D industry
  • Proficient in principles of project management
  • Design experience specifying and utilizing the following transmission structure types:
  • Lattice Steel Structures
  • Laminated Wood Pole Structures
  • Concrete Structures
  • Experience using the following software packages LPILE
