Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler is currently recruiting for a Senior Waste Modelling Consultant with an excellent track record within waste modelling and data analysis. Reporting to an Associate Director leading our waste and recycling collection work with local authorities and government clients (including WRAP), the successful candidate will be required to be involved in developing research and modelling strategies, coordinating data gathering, analysing complex data sets, using existing waste collection and waste flow models and developing new decision support tools. The candidate may also be required to manage discrete tasks and projects, albeit this is not the initial focus of the role. 


Key Duties

  • Lead the technical delivery of desk-based reviews of waste collection schemes and contracts, including spread-sheet based performance analysis
  • Act as technical expert in the areas of waste collection, waste systems modelling and waste data analysis
  • Evaluation of collection service proposals in a procurement context, using robust evidence and well-reasoned arguments to underpin operational and financial assessments
  • Develop efficient methodologies to solve analytical problems and communicate these clearly and concisely through contribution to proposals for new work and the issue of work instructions (verbal and written) for junior staff
  • Enhance existing products and services through the development of spreadsheet and potentially web-based analytical tools 
  • Understand project work sequences to contribute to or manage the delivery of projects
  • Organise, attend, contribute to and take actions from multi-disciplinary meetings with suppliers and clients, acting as Amec Foster Wheeler's technical representative
  • Prepare graphical outputs (tables, figures, infographics) to present the findings of complex data manipulation tasks via a clear format
  • Prepare project and technical reports, including progress reports
  • Contribute to other waste management projects

Skills / Qualifications

  • BSc/BEng or equivalent plus post qualification experience in a technical role involving advanced data analysis and/or modelling
  • Consultancy, contractor or waste industry background 
  • Chartered Waste Manager or close to achieving this status
  • Member of a relevant professional body such as CIWM 
  • Has a proven understanding of waste and recycling collection systems and material flows in the context of the waste management industry
  • Applies a methodical approach to problem solving and a high level of attention to detail, including the ability to check calculations and models developed by colleagues
  • Good time management skills, including the ability to respond to requests for outputs at short notice. An ability to innovate and tailor solutions to meet evolving client requirements is therefore critical to the role
  • Excellent numerical, data handling and spreadsheet skills
  • Experience of working within a technical consultancy environment or within a client organisation involving direct contact with consultants or consultancy projects
  • Good overall knowledge of waste processing technologies and related performance considerations
  • Good organisational and communication skills, including preparation of technical reports
  • Able to engage in active verbal and written communications with client and supply chain contractors
  • Able to understand and rapidly adapt to differing working procedures as required by individual clients
  • Able to deal proactively with senior colleagues and client personnel in the delivery of their work


  • Working knowledge of statistics and their application to data in a waste management context
  • Understanding of waste legislation and policy in the UK
  • Working knowledge of common models used in the waste sector, e.g. Wrate, KAT, along with IT systems such as collection routing software and in-cab technology
  • Project management experience

It is essential that the candidate holds a UK driving licence and is prepared to travel to client sites
