AECOM is seeking a Lead Discipline Estimator - Heavy Civil Construction to be based in our Greenwood Village, CO location.

Position Description or Typical Responsibilities:

Business Acumen:

Understands estimating terminology and measures and recognizes processes/project actions that may impact the project.

Participates in the analysis and utilization of estimates to predict key project issues.

Assists the Project Manager in presenting, trouble-shooting and improving estimates.

Understands construction means, methods, and sequences.

Familiar with financial analysis (NPV, ROIC, ROCE).

Technical Skills:

Coordinates estimating activities for proposals.

Participates in the development and implementation of estimating standards and procedures.

Reviews final estimate packages for accuracy and completeness.

Prepares ROIC and IRR forecasts.

Assists in preparing budgets and performance plans.

Oversees the preparation of crew build-ups and production rate determinations.

Determines construction equipment selection.

Develops Work Breakdown Structures.

Manages the preparation of an estimate.

Leads Project Team estimate reviews.

Evaluates suitability of scope and execution plan for basis of estimate.

Reviews and approves Estimate Plans (approach, techniques, level of effort, cost, schedule), Basis of Estimates and qualifications.

Reviews and approves bid tabulations responding to the customer/Request for Proposal requirements.

Collects, analyzes and archives project data. Develops historical documentation.

Reconciles current project estimate comparisons with previous performance and market benchmark data.

Negotiates internal issues, priorities, and deadlines.

Prepares and negotiates change orders.

Performs contingency and risk analysis.

Delivers estimate presentations to the Executive Review Committee.

Minimum Requirements:


Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction or demonstrated equivalent combination of education, training, and/or related experience.


Entrants to this position require extensive experience in the Engineering or Construction Industry with 8 years in estimating.

Typically possess 5+ years of experience on a project performing work outside the estimating function that can be equated into knowledge required to be a strong Estimator.

Demonstrated experience constructing and estimating Dams, Reservoirs, Locks, and/or other Heavy Civil construction including as many of the following areas of work as possible: Earthwork, Concrete, Electrical, Utilities- Wet & Dry, Marine, Pavements, and/or Rail Systems.

Demonstrated ability to communicate well with superiors and subordinates, conduct well managed and organized reviews, teach Junior Estimators, and to be a team player.

Experience estimating in a Joint Venture environment including writing & following Joint Venture instructions, collaborating with Joint Venture partners, and conducting reviews.

Has a strong understanding of planning and scheduling and of the company cost structure (overheads, G&A, insurances)

Possess functional technical knowledge and emotional maturity to "push back" when clients or management want cost estimates produced that are known to be faulty, unsubstantiated or otherwise unfit for the purpose.

Expectation management, negotiation, influencing and making things happen when you have little or no formal authority over those contributing to the estimate.

Preferred Requirements:

Past experience as lead estimator on projects of $50 million and higher.
