Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor and working closely with Electrical, Instrumentation and Measurement Technicians and Craftsmen, the Controls and Automation Technician will be responsible for the configuration maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of Wellsite, Plant and Unit Control Systems.

Controls and Automation Technician Position

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide routine programing support necessary to troubleshoot and function test existing plant control systems and their interactions with Fire and Gas Systems as well as associated HMIs
  • Provide part time asset support making programming changes associated with approved MOCs (Management of Change)
  • Participate in P&ID and other design reviews
  • Provide valuable input in the design and modifications of new and existing process control, electrical and various instrumentation systems.
  • Participate in RCFAs, 5 Whys and share learnings with the team
Position Information
  • Identify and support cost reduction and process efficiency improvement initiatives
  • Programming/Testing of PLCs and Configuration of HMIs
  • Comply with all Safety and Environmental procedures, regulations and standards

Education Requirements

  • Electronics Technology, Controls and Automation Diploma or Instrumentation Diploma or Journey-Level certification required
  • Consideration given to technical personnel with demonstrated, practical experience


Must Have Skills

  • 5+ years of experience in a design capacity
  • Good working knowledge of electrical drawings, P&IDs, Shutdown Keys
  • Previous programming experience required
  • Oil and gas operations experience and maintenance knowledge is an asset
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of control design and of control philosophies
  • Outstanding organizational, project and time management skills
  • Practical understanding and ability to use MS Office tools including Word and Excel


Additional Requirements

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada for anyone other than current employer
  • Must possess a valid driver's license (abstract of driving record required)
  • Some travel, overtime and after hours coverage required
  • Willing to work nights, weekends, holidays and be on-call to respond to emergencies when required
  • Able to climb ladders and stairs, work at heights and in confined spaces
  • Willing to work outdoors in inclement weather
  • Must reside within the area – no relocation is being offered
  • Using safe lifting techniques, able to lift and carry 20 kg from ground to waist level
  • Ability to work safely wearing a respirator or Self-contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
  • Willing to participate on an emergency response team
  • Willing to comply with Shell's drug-free and harassment-free work environment and comply with all safety policies and procedures
