Tullow Begins Exploration on Block 9 in Bangladesh

Tullow Oil has begun exploration operations on Block 9 in Bangladesh, a senior energy ministry official said. "They began the drilling at block 9 on Sunday," Zahangir Kabir, general manager of Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) said.

The production-sharing contract for the block at Rasulpur in Comilla district, southeast of Dhaka, covers an area of 6,880 square kilometers. A number of significant discoveries have already been made in the area including the Bakhrabad gas field.

The Titas gas field is also near the northeast border of Block 9.

Last September ChevronTexaco sold its stake in the Block to Niko Resources. Niko holds a 60% stake; Tullow hold 30% and BAPEX owns the remaining 10% stake.
