BJ Services Wins HSE Award from BP Norway
BP
Every year BP Norway organizes a Contractor HSE day to share experiences and good practices, celebrate successes and get alignment with the contractors on the way forward. BJ Services received the company's 2003 HSE Award.
Some of the reasons why BJ Services won was: full ownership of all BP's goals, rules and regulations; no DAFWC, RWI or spills since February from the vessel "Vestfonn"; and 1½ years of coiled tubing contract with a "clean" HSE record and a proactive attitude amongst offshore personnel.
Contractor involvement
The Vessel Operations Manager, John Taylor, received the Award on behalf of the company, and he has been the company's representative with a lot of North Sea customers. This is only the second time in his experience that the company hiring them has asked for their HSE programs, experiences and views.
"Generally they do not involve the contractors," he says. This was also the first year he participated in BP Norway's HSE day for contractors.
"The meeting was fantastic, and I have to say that I have never been in a meeting where the participants showed such involvement. Most of the people spoke and threw in views and directions," Taylor says, and continues…
"The guys in my crew say that the lifting immersion program in BP is the one of the most intense and informative that they have seen. We have had a lot of discussions after watching the films. The thing that influenced our crew most was that the personnel who were involved in the accident appeared on the film and were obviously still affected by their loss."
BP Contractor HSE Day
The purpose of the HSE day is to share experiences and good practices, celebrate successes and get alignment with the contractors on the way forward. After all, our contractors account for about 80 percent of all offshore man-hours.
Several contractors presented their approach to better HSE management. Smedvig in particular gave a very good presentation on the change process they have been through since the Gyda fatality last year.
BP shared their plans for improving the key indicator performance next year. The Business Unit will further develop our safety culture by setting clear goals, having mandatory safety leadership training, and building a culture where people will accept intervention.
