A tropical depression that formed earlier Thursday is slowly moving west through the Bahamas toward the Gulf of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center reports in its 2 p.m. EDT advisory. The system could reach the eastern coast of Mexico in a day or two, and it has a 50% chance of becoming a tropical depression before then. The system continues to show signs of organization, but while conditions are favorable for storm formation, its proximity to land will likely inhibit any significant development.
