Deepwater Horizon Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

The nearly 100-ton containment dome was positioned over the leaking Macondo well late Friday afternoon.

After carefully guiding the concrete and steel structure to its destination nearly one mile down to the muddy seabed, BP is now working to connect the four-story-tall cofferdam to the drillship Discoverer Enterprise via a pair concentric risers. An Associated Press article quoted a BP spokesman as saying that the operation to contain the leaking oil was progressing well, but he cautioned that additional challenges with the unprecedented approach were expected.

During a Friday afternoon press conference, BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said that evacuation of crude oil to the drillship for processing and storage could begin as soon as Monday.
