Oil Majors Make Preparations for General Strike in Nigeria

Oil majors in Nigeria said they were taking action to prepare for the impact of a possible general strike from Thursday.

"We will scale down our operations once it starts," an official of Total S.A. unit Elf Petroleum Nigeria, said. "We cannot stop them from going on strike as that will make matters worse."

"We are just preparing for it," an official of Shell's Nigeria unit said Tuesday. "We don't talk about what we expect."

State-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. is scheduled to meet in Abuja Tuesday with the country's two oil unions and major retailers of petroleum products. The meeting will try to avert the nationwide strike planned to begin Thursday. Labor unions have given the Nigerian government until Thursday to explain its position over recent petroleum products price hikes.
