The testing operations of the Farha South structure on Block 3 onshore Oman have been successfully completed. Test production flow rate of 379 bopd was recorded from the Barik layer in the vertical section of the Farha South-3 well. The result will have a significant impact on the reserve potential of the structure and the surrounding area.
The Farha South-3 well was drilled to appraise the Farha South oil discovery earlier this year in February and March. The Barik sandstone displayed excellent oil shows whilst drilling, but was never tested. The well has now been re-entered and it tested good quality oil from the Barik at a rate of 379 barrels of oil per day from a 4 meter zone of perforations at the top. The oil has a density of 42 deg API and a low gas-oil-ratio.
The Lower Al Bashir sandstone in the Farha South-3 well tested in April this year 754 bopd from a horizontal sidetrack of the well. It is estimated that the Lower Al Bashir layer alone could contain some 8 to 10 million barrels of recoverable oil. The successful testing of the Barik sandstone will have a significant impact on the reserve potential of the Farha South structure and the surrounding area.
The rig will now move to test the heavy oil zones encountered in East Saiwan-2 on Block 4.
"We are delighted with the excellent flow rate from the Barik layer. Given that a vertical well will produce less than a horizontal well, the 379 bopd from the Barik layer outclasses the 754 bopd we got from the horizontal sidetrack of Lower Al Bashir layer," commented Tethys' Managing Director Magnus Nordin.
Tethys has a 50 percent interest in the licenses covering Blocks 3 and 4. Consolidated Contractors Energy Development (Oman) Ltd holds the remaining 50 percent and is operator.
