Polish President Plays Down Azerbaijani-Russian Gas Deal

President Lech Kaczynski, commenting on the Russian-Azerbaijani gas deal signed a few days ago, said that in view of small quantities involved it is of a symbolic nature.

President Kaczynski continued his visit to Azerbaijan today where he discussed, among other things, energy issues with Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev.

Kaczynski stressed that Poland's policy towards this region is adequate and bringing positive results. In this context he recalled the Cracow energy summit in 2007 attended by heads of states, including the president of Azerbaijan.

"This is a success from which Poland may derive considerable economic, strategic and political benefits, said the Polish president. However, he stressed that this requires cooperation and close contacts with Azerbaijan, Georgia and Ukraine.
