Transocean Sedco Forex Inc. today announced that the jackup rig Trident IX sustained damage on November 2 while drilling offshore East Java in the Madura Straits, Indonesia. Damage to the rig, which is apparently limited to the drill floor area, resulted from an uncontrollable release of natural gas which subsequently ignited. All 92 crewmen aboard the rig at the time of the incident were evacuated safely and without injury onto a standby service vessel. An assessment of damage will commence once personnel are able to board the rig. No estimation can be made regarding the length of rig downtime until a damage assessment is completed. Transocean Sedco Forex expects insurance on the rig to cover the amount of all damages to the rig.
The Trident IX is a MODEC 400-C-35 cantilever jackup rig capable of operating in water depths of up to 400 feet.
