Schilling Robotics, Inc., a leading global producer of subsea control systems, ROVs (remotely operated vehicles), and other high-technology equipment and services for oil and gas subsea exploration and production, announced the appointment of Paul A. Whalen as senior vice president of operations. Schilling is currently experiencing 40% revenue growth, although even with surging orders, the company aims to cut 15% from its start-to-finish manufacturing cycle.
Philip F. Otto, Schilling’s president and CEO, commented that Whalen’s long experience at Toyota’s first U.S. manufacturing facility (in Long Beach, California) provided him with the skills and practical background necessary to smoothly drive the growth of Schilling’s complex manufacturing systems. His service at American Racing Equipment, Inc. and Pentair Pool and Spa, where he led successful turnaround efforts in manufacturing operations, also prepared Whalen to tackle diverse scenarios in inventory management, production streamlining, quality assurance and product upgrade. Otto said, "Paul will bring finesse to our supply chain, ensuring that we have the right components in the right place and at the right time."
Whalen said about his new assignment, "At Schilling, I am delighted to say, I will be mounting a tune-up rather than a turnaround. My challenge, much in the spirit of the Toyota Way, will be continuous improvement. We will be improving our processes every day not just to deliver 'more' but to deliver 'better,' and we will ensure that customer focus drives our improvements. In this process, Schilling’s exceptionally talented and dedicated workforce will be our biggest asset."
Whalen holds a B.A. degree in economics from the University of California, Irvine and an M.B.A from the University of Southern California.
