Oil workers in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria have been held hostage since Monday, July 31st by armed Nigerian youths. There are no reported injuries and Shell is negotiating with local leaders to resolve the situation peacefully. The hijackers that took over the two rigs are demanding more jobs for local citizens. The two barge rigs that were boarded are the Parker rig 72 and Parker rig 75. The Parker barge rigs just returned to service at the beginning of July. They had been idle since November 1999 due to the civil unrest in the area.
