Rig in Peru Closed After Workers Held Hostage
Pluspetrol Norte closed an oil rig in its Block 8 section of Peru's northeastern jungle after members of an indigenous community captured and held Pluspetrol workers against their will, according to news reports.
Pluspetrol stated to the Peru securities regulator that operations at Pavayacu, the rig closed Tuesday by the company, had been halted because of protests held by people in a nearby community who were demanding that the company implement social programs.
The statement issued by Pluspetrol said operations at Pavayacu will continue when the protests end. "We lament and reject this kind of act that go against the security of the workers," the statement read.
