Beacon Maritime, Inc. and Gulf Copper & Manufacturing Corporation have formed a joint venture company, Beacon/Gulf Copper, Ltd., which will focus on the refurbishment and upgrade of mobile offshore drilling units and equipment. In an effort to better position themselves for anticipated increased activity in such projects, the two companies have agreed to build on the contrasting strengths of one another. Specifically, Beacon/Gulf Copper, Ltd. will take advantage of the business development, technical and project management abilities of Beacon Maritime, combined with the facilities, equipment and production capabilities, which have been established at Gulf Copper & Manufacturing Corporation during the last fifty years. Beacon Maritime, which has recently received ISO 9001 certification status, will incorporate its operating procedures into the joint venture, operating primarily from Gulf Copper's facility in Port Arthur, Texas, which has 2,400 feet of dock space.
Additionally, Beacon Maritime, Inc. has recently acquired a marine construction facility on the Sabine River in Orange, Texas. This ten-acre facility has over 900 feet of water frontage and 22,500 square feet of covered fabrication area. In addition to serving as the center for "heavy" fabrication support of all company activities, this will be the operating base for Beacon Builders, a division of Beacon Maritime, which specializes in the construction and outfitting of offshore accommodations modules.
