Azerbaijan Halts Exploration of Alov-Araz-Sarq Field
Thursday, November 21, 2002
Azerbaijan has halted all drilling operations by foreign companies on the Alov-Araz-Sarq oilfield. Iran is disputing Azerbaijan's claim to this field. Baku is trying to prevent any conflicts between the counties over the ownership of the field. They are also awaiting the resolution of the international legal status of the Caspian followed by its division into national sectors. Until an agreement can be reached all drilling and exploratory operations have been banned.
