A gas well in the southwestern province of Baluchistan was attacked by rocket fire Monday night. The attack happened at Sui, about 275 miles east of the provincial capital Quetta, according to a senior official at Pakistan Petroleum Ltd. It took almost two hours for PPL engineers and local authorities to bring the fire under control and begin repair work on the well. Gas supply from well number 47 has been suspended and PPL engineers will try to have the well restarted by the end of this week.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Security for oil and gas companies in Baluchistan, where tribal chieftains often fight for their share of the benefits from exploration, has long been a cause of concern.
