Oilworker Kidnapped in Nigeria

Shell reported one of its workers had been kidnapped by militant youths while working in the Niger Delta. The company said in a statement that armed youths kidnapped the female Nigerian staff member on Thursday at a meeting in Amukpe village, Sapele local government area of southwest Delta state.

The ethnic Uhrobo youths want Shell to recognize their community as autonomous from a rival one. "They have made a demand for the sum of four million naira ($31,558) ransom to compensate for their alleged expenses in planning the kidnap," it said. "We are not ready to negotiate under duress or pay ransom for hostage taking," a company spokesman said.
