"This contract will realize the powerful opportunity that exists when operator and contractor partner for performance with a shared focus on a common set of results," commented Duncan Porteous, Operations Manager. The likely first well coached by TLS will be A16 on Andrew, to be drilled by the combined Harding/Andrew rig team.
The six-man TLS project team will initially be resourced with two onshore project managers and two offshore performance coaches from RLG and two performance coaches from KCA DEUTAG. The RLG coaches will be phased out from TLS during the early part of next year leaving the team fully resourced from KCA DEUTAG. KCA DEUTAG personnel will be trained by TLS ahead of the transition period, with development plans and mentoring programs established for those assigned to TLS.
The timing of the TLS contract coincides with KCA DEUTAG's move towards a performance based drilling contract with BP and is the vehicle to make the performance improvement. The scheme will include a crew performance award scheme to recognize excellent safety and well delivery results.
Technical Limit is one of the cornerstones of BP's 'Beyond the Best' Common Process program consisting of:
TLS has already started by facilitating and coaching the engagement of the senior leadership teams from BP and KCA DEUTAG to establish the clear accountabilities and joint commitments necessary to lead the performance improvement effort.
"The BP leadership team has recognized that both the process and the behaviors are critical for a successful implementation and that top quartile results are unlikely without engagement of the entire team," commented Porteous. "Their ambition is to be the class leader in technical limit implementation and instrumental in the delivery transformation for MNS."
TLS was established because KCA DEUTAG and RLG realized that there was an opportunity to build on the success that both had enjoyed with Technical Limit and Theoretical Maximum Performance (TMP) implementations.
In short, this is the combination of expert knowledge of drilling with performance coaching and change management to deliver operational performance beyond previous expectations.
Those first implementations took place in 1997 with KCA Drilling and in 1998 with DEUTAG, both with Shell Expro in the Northern Business Unit. Since then, Technical Limits has become one of the buzz phrases of the oil industry.
TLS represents a service level, commitment and ownership associated with coaching that has not previously been seen at contractor level.
Each implementation is designed to enhance people skills and deliver tangible business results. A commitment to excellence, ownership of performance results, quality and superior customer responsiveness becomes the client organization's personality and culture. Such exceptional long-term commitment produces bottom line results, a focused, inspired team and a lasting management style.
TLS attacks the Technical Limit using a methodology derived from the partners' extensive history of successful work in the North Sea drilling industry, a record unmatched by any other service company.
