Pertamina Will Repair 440-km Pipeline

Pertamina said it will repair the 440 kilometer pipeline that delivers natural gas from the BP-operated Pagerungan field. Pertamina officials are also denying claims made by BP that there is a serious risk of rupture in the pipeline. The company did say that there was some erosion in the pipeline caused by the natural process of cold and warm water currents meeting in that part of the Java Sea. It was also stressed that there were no leaks in the pipeline.

Repairs are expected to take three months and work is scheduled to begin in mid-October. Repairs will include installation of additional support from the basement in parts of a 140-kilometer stretch between Pulau Raas and Pulau Kangean. The work will be carried out in stages so as not to disrupt delivery of gas supplies. Pertamina also maintains that the navy exclusion zone created in an area above the pipeline was to avoid incidents while the repair work is taking place.
