Nigerian Women End Siege at Ewan Platform

ChevronTexaco reports that the women protesters that seized its platform offshore southwestern Nigeria have ended their nine-day seige. "The women are no longer there, they left this morning on their own," a company spokesman said. "We didn't have to sign an agreement with them because they are not from our host community."

Approximately 50 ethnic-Ilaje protesters from southwest Ondo state had stormed the Ewan platform in a dugout canoe last week, demanding amenities and jobs for their community. The protest forced ChevronTexaco to evacuate staff and shut down the field, a much smaller operation than its main area of operation in the western Niger Delta.
