Explosion Reported at a Government Building in Nigeria's South

LAGOS, Dec 22, 2006 (AP)

An explosion occurred outside a government building in Nigeria's southern oil hub of Port Harcourt on Saturday, according to an Associated Press reporter on the scene.

A bomb appeared to have exploded against the building that houses the state governor's office and other major government offices for southern Rivers state. Pieces of a car could be seen around the explosion site, and a reporter who arrived shortly after the incident could see smoke still rising.

According to an email sent to The Associated Press from an address used by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta early Saturday two car bombs were planted in strategic locations in Nigeria's oil-rich delta. The email stated that the bombs would be detonated "shortly." >Copyright (c) 2006 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
