At drilling commencement, Gamal Kulumbetov, BMB Munai's Chief Operating Officer, stated, "We have been anxious to begin new drilling in the Emir field. When we acquired our interest in the license territory there had been previous drilling within the Emir field by a Kazakh state-owned drilling company. The Emir-1 well was drilled to its target depth in 1996, however very high pressure was encountered and the driller responded to the threat of a blowout by intentionally killing the well by injecting an unknown heavy substance into the bore hole. We have made several attempts to restore the well without success. Our study of the drill logs on the Emir-1 well has provided valuable guidance in planning the Emir-6 well and we expect this new well will allow us to better understand the potential of the entire Emir field."
