Group Created to Block Energy Privatization

Mexico's electricians union SME, political party PRD and the Oaxaca Popular Peoples' Assembly (Appo) along with 320 other social organizations have created a national energy sovereignty defense front called Frente Nacional en Defensa de la Soberania Energetica.

The front will work to prevent the privatization of the energy sector and stop rate hikes, local press quoted SME official Fernando Amezcua as saying.

PRD candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador lost this year's presidential election to PAN party candidate Felipe Calderon, who said he would seek reforms to attract private investment in the energy sector.
