Minister: Offshore Hydrocarbons Bidding Launch by Year-end

Barbados' government could launch bidding by year-end for offshore oil and gas exploration, local press quoted energy and environment minister Elizabeth Thompson as saying.

There is "tremendous" interest among several companies to bid for blocks, some of which have sent representatives, Thompson said.

"People are offering tremendous amounts of money, even just to buy seismic data and so on to be involved in the process, so we think that it is going to go very well."

The cabinet "soon" will examine the general policy "that will sign off on these priority areas," she said. In addition, planners must identify international consultants who will draw up the bid blocks and the general exploration program.
