The appraisal well on the northwestern portion of the Ormen Lange field offshore Norway, 6305/4-1, has been completed. According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, the well confirmed a previous estimate of 400 billion cubic meters of gas reserves. It flowed at a maximum rate of 1.8 million cubic meters per day and proved good reservoir productivity. The well also explored sliding and drainage problems on the field and the development partners will now evaluate the results. The well which was drilled by the semisubmersible, Scarabeo 5, has been plugged and abandoned.
Ormen Lange is split between three licenses, PL 208, 209 and 250, each with a different ownership structure. Norsk Hydro is operator for the development phase while Shell will take over when it comes on stream. Partners are BP, ExxonMobil, Statoil and Petoro.
