The new technology would have higher levels of automation, Sao Paulo state scientific research foundation Fapesp reported, quoting the head of Petrobras' research department on new pumping and reserves recovery technology.
Petrobras research center Cenpes employs 1,500 researchers in all areas of the oil industry. Deepwater operations are included under the Procap 2000 research program that started in 1993, focusing on the development of new technology for oil production at depths greater than 1,000 meters.
The first Procap program was launched in 1986 and helped Petrobras become one of the world leaders in deepwater oil E&P. Other fields included in the research are Marlim Leste and Albacora Leste, also in the Campos basin.
The company plans to invest US$1.5bn in technological development including Cenpes from January 2007-December 2011.
