Gas Blowout in Indonesia Injures Seven
Fire from a gas well blowout Monday at PT Exspan's operations in the onshore Tarakan field in East Kalimantan injured seven, according to an official from PT Medco Energi International.
Exspan, a unit of Medco, produces 24 million cubic feet a day of gas and 1,100 barrels a day of oil from the Tarakan production sharing block. The condition of those who sustained injuries has stabilized and equipment damage and loss from the accident has been minor, according to company officials.
Gas supply hasn't been disrupted by the fire because the accident happened at a "gas reactivation well," and not a producing well, he added. Tarakan's supplies gas to a nearby methanol plant.
This is the second gas blowout incident in three months, a result of high gas pressure build, in East Kalimantan. In March, TotalFinaElf E&P Indonesie suffered a gas blowout in the Mahakam Delta.
