In-Depth Systems Successfully Uses RFID Technology for Marathon Well

In-Depth Systems, Inc. has successfully proven its radio frequency identification (RFID) technology for firing the perforation guns to complete a Marathon Oil Company well in Alaska. The completion technology, Excape(TM) Express, not only reduces the cost of well completions, it also considerably improves the safety and reliability of the operation. The In-Depth RFID technology is similar to that used on toll roads for vehicle identification. The technology was jointly conceived, patented, and developed by In-Depth Systems, Inc. and Marathon Oil Company.

Tim Tipton, Marathon Vice President of Technology, said, "Marathon is pleased to have participated in this industry first use of RFID technology in a downhole oilfield application. We see the application of this technology increasing as its productivity improvements and cost savings benefits are realized." David S. Wesson, Director of In-Depth, said "In-Depth is committed to being the first company to expand the uses of RFID technology into downhole applications. Our engineering team is continuing to develop RFID technology for other oilfield applications. The industry will hear more about these developments soon."
