The SwellPacker was deployed for a major operator in the Middle East on what is believed to be the world's first open hole intelligent completion.
SwellPacker, which recently won the best in completion technology award in the 2005 World Oil awards, is based on the swelling properties of rubber in hydrocarbons. Designed for use in both open and cased holes, its thermodynamic absorption allows continuous expansion and swelling to provide an annular sea.
In the 1000th deployment, a SwellPacker cable feed through was used to isolate several open-hole lateral legs from the mother bore. The SwellPacker created an annular seal through the absorption of oil into the rubber element allowing for faster installation through the avoidance of packer setting requirements.
By installing the cables through the SwellPacker cable feed through, the need for cable connections was eliminated and the risk of failure was reduced dramatically.
The use of SwellPacker allowed the operator to reduce the size of the mother bore section from 8.5in to 6.125in resulting in overall well cost savings of more than 30 per cent.
Easy Well was recently acquired by Halliburton Energy Services Inc. Easywell marketing manager Steve Kent said: "The deployment of the 1,000th SwellPacker is a key milestone both for our company and for this exceptional technology which has a 100 per cent success rate.
"The achievement of such a significant marker in our history elevates our packers to the level of a mature technology. We now look forward to reaching the 2,000 mark with SwellPacker as we expect further excellent results for this product.
