The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States this week was down 21 to 907. Of the rigs running nationwide, 757 were exploring for gas and 150 were looking for oil and one was listed as miscellaneous. A year ago the rig count was at 1,107. Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas gained two rigs and California gained one. Louisiana was down eight and New Mexico and Oklahoma were each down four. Wyoming was down one and Alaska was unchanged.
