Wood Group Wireline Services Introduces Power Hammer

Wood Group Wireline Services introduces the new Power Hammer, which uses extremely high pressure gas from powder charges to employ a powerful downward hammer action that forces tools into and clears blockages in well bores, helping to prevent expensive workovers.

An alternative to commonly used slickline jars and hydraulic hammers, the Power Hammer, designed and built by Wood Group, is shorter, more efficient, easier to transport and more powerful. It incorporates RDX or HMX powder charges to drive a rod of 6" travel that strikes with a downward force. The standard model ranges from 1 " to 2 " in diameter with adapter sleeves available for any size wellbore. The bottom of the hammer is designed to accommodate a variety of tools from sliding sleeve shifting tools, chisels, drive rods or any special tool required.

The Power Hammer, exclusive to Wood Group, has had extremely successful results during development and field testing, and is now available to customers throughout the United States and offshore Gulf of Mexico. Initial uses for the Power Hammer were on wells in which the customer had utilized all available slickline-conveyed means of removing the stuck fish in the wellbore. The next option would have been to mobilize coil tubing, a snubbing unit or a work-over rig. Power Hammer has been very successful in eliminating that additional rig expense.

"The traditional hammers available to the industry today were and still are a good tool," comments Mike Herrin, Louisiana regional operations manager. "However; the new Power Hammer tool offers a more effective alternative for removing wellbore obstructions. Clients have praised it for its success and cost savings.
