Keel Laid for Fully LNG-powered Cruise Ship
AIDAnova to be first of seven LNG-powered cruise ships.

Carnival Corp. & plc reported Tuesday that construction has begun on the first of its seven next-generation cruise ships that will generate 100 percent of their power in port and at sea from liquefied natural gas (LNG). The company marked the occasion with a keel-laying ceremony at Seatrade Europe in Hamburg, Germany for the AIDAnova, which it said will be the world’s first fully LNG-powered cruise ship.

“Today marked a significant milestone in the construction of this next-generation of Carnival Corporation ships featuring our ‘green cruising’ design, which will be the most environmentally friendly ships in our company’s history,” Carnival CEO Arnold Donald said in a written statement.

The AIDAnova, slated for a fall 2018 delivery by shipbuilder Meyer Werft Papenburg, will join Carnival’s AIDA cruises brand. The six subsequent LNG-powered ships, which will be built by Meyer Werft and Meyer Turku, will join the AIDA fleet through 2022.

“We thank Carnival Corporation and AIDA Cruises very much for their trust and their pioneering decision to implement LNG technology onboard their cruise ships,” stated Bernard Meyer, CEO of Meyer Yards. “The corresponding infrastructure is now being developed at numerous ports – Carnival Corporation has made a decision that not only benefits the environment, but that also is highly important for the whole cruise industry.”
