Preparing a Mechanical Engineering Resume
When preparing a mechanical engineering resume, it's important to keep a singular goal in mind.
"The purpose of the resume is to get the interview," said Keith Hampton, delivery manager with Apex Life Sciences, which specializes in placing scientific and engineering professionals.
How the resume looks matters as much as the content of the document, a veteran mechanical engineer with extensive worldwide oil and gas experience told Rigzone.
"Your resume is your showcase display to a prospective employer," said Jennifer Bell, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) volunteer and Past Chairman with ASME's Petroleum Division Executive Committee. "The physical appearance of your resume is just as important as your physical appearance in an interview."
A mechanical engineer's resume should convey the candidate's initiative, ability to communicate and overall professional recognition and accomplishments such as publications and industry technical committees on which he or she has served, Bell noted. Depending on your level of experience, she added that deciding which jobs to list on a resume depends on relevance.
"You may not want to list jobs in detail that you had over 10 years ago, but be sure to include at least an employer and title if you feel something you did over 10 years ago is relevant to the position you are pursuing," she said.
Specific qualifications that add particular value to a mechanical engineering resume include a professional engineering license and knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and computer-assisted engineering software, noted Israr Kabir, ASME's business development manager for manufacturing.
Hampton offered the following tips for creating a resume:
- Use a "summary of skills" rather than a formal objective: "Bulletize" your skills as they relate to the job description
- Make sure that the resume exhibits a clean flow that builds and guides the reader
- In addition to the summary of skills, highlight:
- Your education and training in said skills
- An in-depth listing of the your skills and experience
- Easily readable experience, listed in reverse chronological order, that targets your hands-on background corresponding to the position
"Build your resume so that it reflects 'growth' in your role and responsibilities," Hampton added. "Be consistent in your font and triple-check that there are no typos."
