Rowan Lays Off Another 50 Offshore Workers

Rowan Lays Off Another 50 Offshore Workers
Just weeks after announcing it was laying off 150 offshore workers, Rowan Cos. has said it will let another 50 workers go in August.

Rowan Companies, Inc. has announced its second round of layoffs in one month. According to a letter dated June 20 to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), Rowan Companies, Inc., a subsidiary of UK-based offshore drilling contractor Rowan Companies, plc, will lay off an additional 50 employees in Houston.

Just like the 150 layoffs announced in May, affected employees work onboard the Rowan Reliance (UDW drillship) and will be laid off due to termination of the ship’s drilling contract. Currently, the Rowan Reliance is contracted by Cobalt International Energy on North Platte in the Gulf of Mexico near Morgan City, Louisiana. The rig is managed from a Houston office.

The layoffs will occur during a period of 14 days, beginning August 21. The letter to the TWC states that Rowan plans on retaining certain employees to maintain the rig while it’s idle. Layoffs are expected to be permanent and employees have no bumping rights.

Cut,Cut,Cut is the new mantra. Engineers and Geologists are no longer running the company. Bean-counters and MBAs worried about ROI to the shareholders reign supreme !

As the wife of a 34 year Rowan retiree, I am not surprised AT ALL at this news. Rowan is NOT the company or THE PEOPLE that it was at one time. All the trust and confidence that was built up for years went down the toilet with new management several years ago. What a shame...dedicated and loyal employees were dumped, cut off and effectively DISMISSED. WHAT. A. SHAME.
