Brexit Pledge 'Positive' for UK Oil, Gas Industry
The UK Prime Minister Theresa May's pledge that EU citizens currently living in the UK will be given the right to remain in the country after Brexit is positive news.

The UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s pledge late Thursday that EU citizens currently living in the UK will be given the right to remain in the country after Brexit is positive news for the UK energy industry, Michael Burns, oil and gas partner at law firm Ashurst, told Rigzone.

"The confirmation from the UK government that no EU citizens living in the UK should face a 'cliff edge' as part of Brexit will be positive news for the UK energy industry, which relies significantly on the specialist skills and knowledge of EU citizens within its business; directly in the form of employees and contractors but also more indirectly in terms of financiers and consultants,” Burns said.

The latest Brexit development follows news that a softer stance would be taken on immigration in the UK.

The Immigration Bill announced in the Queen’s speech revealed that the government would be able to end the free movement of EU nationals into the UK, but still allow the country to attract "the brightest and the best" talent.

“This softer stance on immigration will be welcomed by many sectors, including oil and gas, which rely on an international workforce and need this expertise to successfully deliver projects safely, on time and on budget,” Airswift CEO Peter Searle said in a statement sent to Rigzone Thursday.
