Change in Employee Engagement Levels Can Improve Safety
A small change or improvement in employee engagement levels can make significant changes, Sylvie Tran, Shell USA general manager for safety and environment, revealed.

A small change or improvement in employee engagement levels can result in a significant drop in the rate of incidents per exposure hour, Sylvie Tran, Shell USA general manager for safety and environment, revealed.

“We’ve done some research, looking at our Shell people survey, which is an annual survey that we conduct worldwide with our tens of thousands of employees,” Tran said in a presentation at the Offshore Technology Conference.

“Out of the 40-50 elements that we surveyed for, which include recognition, clarity of direction, work-life balance, we have found that employee engagement index has the strongest correlation to improve safety performance,” she added.

Tran highlighted that Shell’s employee engagement index is a collation of different aspects and includes an in-depth look into topics such as the frequency and quality of employee-supervisor engagement.

An effective way to improve engagement, safety and profits is to empower employees to think and act like owners, driving and participating in the profitable growth of the company. Accidents are not only human tragedies. They are also bad for revenue and costs. Industry leaders like Southwest Airlines, Capital One and BHP Billiton, (clients of mine), and hundreds of private companies treat their employees like trusted business partners, enabling them to make more money for their company and themselves. They consistently see both profits and engagement soar.
