Freeport-McMoRan Lays Off More Workers in Houston
Phoenix-based Freeport-McMoRan will be laying off additional staff in Houston as a result of its recent divestitures.

Freeport-McMoRan Oil and Gas LLC will be cutting more employees at its Houston office. In a notice received by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) April 6, the Phoenix-based company announced it would be laying off 24 workers as a result of the sale of key assets in onshore California and the Gulf of Mexico.

“Regrettably, we have determined we no longer require a number of employees to support these assets,” the letter to the TWC states.

The layoffs will occur from June 5 through June 19 and severance benefits and transition programs (including outplacement services) will be offered to affected employees.

This round of layoffs follows the company’s decision to cut 36 jobs in Houston in early April and 20 jobs in early May due to the same asset sales.

In July 2016, Freeport-McMoRan laid off 160 Houston workers, citing “low oil prices and weak global economic conditions.”
