BP plc employed 74,500 people in 72 different countries in 2016, all of whom helped the company produce 3.3 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, according to a BP statement.

BP plc has revealed that it employed 74,500 people in 72 different countries in 2016, all of whom helped the company produce 3.3 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, according to a BP statement.

The oil and gas firm paid $11.2 billion in employee wages and benefits last year and $7.5 billion in dividends to BP shareholders. Oil prices averages $43.73 in 2016, which was a 12 year low, BP stated.

Last year, BP started up six major projects, three of which were in the U.S., two in Algeria and one in Angola. The company also gave a green light for a further five major projects. Seven major developments are expected to start up in 2017, with 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day of new capacity expected to be online by the end of the year.

BP was granted 71,000 square kilometres of new exploration acreage in 10 different countries in 2016. These countries include Australia, China, Russia, the UK and the U.S.
