HELP WANTED: What Would an Oil, Gas Newcomer Ask?

A major announcement by Exxon Mobil Corp. and results of a Petroplan survey serve as two recent positive signs of a looming oil and gas hiring rebound.

Where there's oil and gas hiring there are bound to be newcomers to the industry, and these "newbies" will likely ask questions about various facets of their roles. We at Rigzone are assembling of list of common technical questions that new entrants to the oil and gas industry would likely ask, and we need your input.

What are some simple, easily answered technical questions that you've heard from a new refinery control room technician, a drilling engineer right out of college, a young pipeline inspector – or myriad other entry-level oil and gas roles? Perhaps you've asked some of these questions yourself.

If you'd like to share some of these frequently asked technical questions, please send them in an email to Matthew Veazey, Rigzone Senior Editor, at Be sure that "O&G NEWBIE QUESTIONS" appears in the subject line.
